JOB DESCRIPTION - NUCLEAR MED TECHNOLOGIST (A)

Job Summary:

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist, under direct supervision, operates high tech medical equipment used in the diagnosis of many diseases and injuries, including Gamma Cameras to attain functional images.

Qualifications:

Education: Completion of a two year approved School of Radiologic Technology

Experience: One year full time experience as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Licensure: Valid state radiology registration as required by state law

Certification: Certification in Nuclear Medicine Technology (NMTCB) or American Registry of Radiologic Technologist (ARRT). Current CPR/BLS Certification

Duties and Responsibilities

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is expected to practice safe procedures and adheres to radiation safety measures under the supervision of the Radiology supervisor or the Radiologist. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:

• Complete patient/family education
• Assist patient in comfort measures
• Prepare the dosage of the radiopharmaceutical ordered
• Administer the radiopharmaceutical by mouth or injection as ordered
• Adhere to radiation standards protecting workers and patients
• Instructing and preparing patients for Nuclear Medicine examination
• Appropriately position for patients
• Operate Gamma cameras
• Produces images of distribution of a radiopharmaceutical as it localizes in and emits signals from the patient’s body
• Produce images for physician interpretation
• Performs and records procedures
• Cleans and disinfects patient rooms
• Follow infection control and safety guidelines

Essential Functions:

• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Participates in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills for continued competence
• Ability to work as a team member
• Skilled in the operation Nuclear Medicine equipment
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and related positioning for accurate imaging
• Attention to detail
• Basic understanding of computer technology
• Perform all duties using proper body mechanics.
• Frequently move/lift between 50-100 pounds, depending on assignment requirements
• Stand for long periods with frequent squatting, twisting, bending, kneeling and reaching to prepare equipment, materials or objects in order to provide patient care or maintain the patient environment
• Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination
• Ability to work in a stressful environment
• Ability to follow directions/instructions from his/her supervisor.
• Consistent attendance is required to assure that the client facilities’ needs and patient needs are met.
