JOB DESCRIPTION - MONITOR TECH (GT)

Job Summary

Monitor technicians observe the electrical activity of heartbeats which is graphically displayed on a series of monitors in cardiac care and telemetry units of hospitals. They examine these patterns and provide the results to physicians and the nursing staff.

Qualifications

  • Program training for cardiac monitors
  • 1 year full time experience as a monitor tech
  • Positive reference verification
  • Current BLS card (American Heart Association required)

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Gather and report heart pattern information on patients
  • Operate monitoring computers that simultaneously display multiple patient results
  • Identify heart pattern changes and abnormalities
  • Clean and maintain equipment, battery packs and wiring systems

Essential functions

  • Must have strong working knowledge of techniques, theory and practice monitor surveillance and cardiac rhythm
  • Must have a command for the English language and ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
  • Seeks to obtain educational resources and create learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge and skills for continued competence in cardiac surveillance
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination
  • Ability to work in a noisy environment
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment
  • Consistent attendance is required to assure that the client facilities needs and patient needs are met.
  • While on assignment the Monitor Technician is expected to comply with all client institutional policies, procedures and practices.

Working Conditions

The Monitor Technician must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as noise, infectious/communicable diseases, blood and bloodborne diseases and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases and dusts. There is also the possibility of physical injury/verbal abuse from an out of control patient/family member. Frequent exposure to stressed patients, families and/or visitors.
