JOB DESCRIPTION - SURGICAL TECHNOLOGIST (VA)

Job Summary:

The Surgical Tech is responsible to maintain the sterile filed in the operating room, being constantly vigilant to see that proper aseptic techniques are utilized to prevent contamination and infection while assisting with procedures in our client’s surgical suites. To assist the surgical team as the sterile member who passes instrument, sutures and sponges during surgery.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Surgical Tech must have graduated from an accredited Surgical Tech program. Certification by the Natioal Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA)
  • Minimum of one year experience as a surgical tech
  • Supervisory references or at a minimum verification of previous work experience
  • Current CPR

Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Before a surgical procedure, helps set up the operating room and organizes sterile table with surgical instruments and equipment, sterile lines and sterile solutions.
  • Checks, adjusts and operates equipment such as sterilizers, lights, suction machines, electrosurgical units and diagnostic equipment.
  • Maintains supply of fluids such as plasma, saline, blood and glucose for use during surgical procedure
  • Prepares patient for surgery by washing, shaving and disinfection incision sites. Also transports, positions patients on the table and covers them with sterile surgical drapes.
  • Scrubs hands and arms, puts on sterile surgical attire to be able to work within the sterile filed established around the patient and to handle the sterile instruments, equipment and supplies used in the procedure.
  • Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner.
  • Helps prepare, care for and dispose of specimens taken for laboratory analysis, holds retractors, cuts sutures and applies dressing as directed.
  • Participates in closing procedures and assures accurate sponge count with circulating nurse
  • Cleans and restocks the operating room
  • Adheres to Joint Commission professional standards and incorporates the National Patient Safety Goals into current practice.
  • Provides age-appropriate care for all age groups
  • Provides care with sensitivity to culturally diverse patient populations
  • Complies with all client institutional policies, procedures and practices.

Essential Functions:

  • Full range of body motion and flexibility required on a daily basis
  • Ability to climb, reach, kneel, stoop and bend required on a daily basis
  • Ability to stand in one spot for extended periods of time
  • Ability to verify visual and audio alarms on machines
  • Full command for the English language and ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Participate in continuing education and learning experiences to enhance and maintain current knowledge base
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor coordination
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment
  • Consistently practice standard precautions
  • Adheres to hospital policy for handling, labeling and disposal of bio hazardous material
  • Ability to work under pressure.
