What Traits Must Travel Nurses Have?

July 18, 2024 Posted by Remede in Blog

A Travel Nurse is typically an registered nurse (RN) or licensed practical nurse (LPN). She or he takes a temporary (temp) contract at a healthcare facility where they need to travel to work. Sometimes nurses will travel an hour or two from home; other times, they may travel across many states.

Travel nurses fill a unique role helping a facility care for patients while the facility seeks the right permanent talent. Sometimes, temp positions may turn into permanent placements.

At Remede, we’ve been helping travelers find positions to fit their needs for many years, long before COVID. So we know what it takes to be successful in a travel nursing position. See our infographic below or scroll down for the article in text to learn about what traits make a successful travel nurse. Ready to apply now? See our job board for the latest openings.

What Traits Must Travel Nurses Have?

Skill and Competency

Experience is Required. As a traveler, it is essential you have a minimum of 1-year experience in your clinical specialty. Many hospitals will require 2 or more years. You must possess the ability to jump right in after a brief orientation.

Adaptability

You must be willing to adapt. As a traveler, you take on new roles and responsibilities with ease. Along with working with different physicians, nurses, supervisors, and other travelers, you will need to adapt to different policies, procedures and EMR systems.

Dependability

Reliability is Essential. While reliability is essential in your career, it’s especially crucial for travelers. The facility depends on you to fulfill the commitment of your contract while providing safe, quality patient care. Be sure to have great references that speak to your dependability and diligence.

Communication

Good communication is a must. The most successful travelers know how to communicate professionally, sharing their knowledge and opinions, standing up for what they believe is best for the patient, without alienating their peers and supervisors.
